My Approach and Process For Photographing Art

As an artist myself I understand the need to reproduce artwork faithfully in terms of colors and values in addition to crisp focus to capture the texture and brushstrokes as they appear on the original work. I prefer to shoot using natural light. Ideally, shooting on a cloudy day or at least in protected shade without any harsh shadows. I can also work in my studio using studio lights and/or flash with soft box diffusers to create as soft a light as possible to minimize reflections from high-gloss surfaces.

Particularly with larger works, I am happy to come to your studio for the shoot. Packing and moving large works across town can be time consuming and increases the risk of damage.

When shooting artwork I utilize a tripod to be able to fine tune camera placement to assure the artwork is parallel to the image sensor and the square and centered in the field of view.

Final image files are delivered electronically, typically via Google Drive or Adobe Creative Cloud.

Privacy and Image Copyright

The original artist retains all rights to the images created. I will not share or use the images of you work in any way without your expressed permission.

Color Management Is Critical

As an artist you selected colors and values to create the mood, tone, and impression of the work and it must be preserved.

Every effort is made to render your works accurately. Each photoshoot begins with capturing a reference image using a color calibration target which is later used when processing the images to create a custom color profile to assure the colors rendered in the finished images are as close as possible to those used in the original work. All image processing work is done on my wide gamut 4K monitor that is regularly color calibrated to assure end to end color management.

Artwork Photography Fees

I am happy to come to your home or studio to photograph your work. Alternatively, clients are welcome to deliver their works to my studio. In either case I charge $75/hour (minimum 1 hour) plus travel at $1.62.mile round trip from my studio, if I am shooting at your location. Once the photo shoot is complete, I then process the images on my computer and produce the desired files to your specifications (typically JPG and/or TIFF) and image processing is similarly charged at $75/hour. Below is a sample invoice for a recent client where I photographed four 20 x 30 acrylic on canvas paintings and produced both JPG and TIFF files. Since all four works were the same size and medium, the photo shoot was shorter as I only had to setup the camera and tripod once, and simply swap in and out each canvas. Multiple works of varying sizes or different mediums would require more time to reset the camera and shooting setup.
