The Overseas Railroad (also known as Flagler's Folly) extended the Florida East Coast Railway to Key West, built between 1905 and 1912. It was partially destroyed by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. Some of the remaining infrastructure was used for the Overseas Highway. In this bridge section you can see the remains of the roadbed that was built on top of the railroad bridge. The decaying remains stand as a stark reminder of the folly of human hubris.

The Story Behind The Image

The Overseas Railroad (also known as Flagler's Folly) extended the Florida East Coast Railway south to Key West. The remaining infrastructure and right of way was used for the Overseas Highway which opened just three years later.

In this bridge section you can see the remains of the roadbed that was built on top of the railroad bridge. The decaying remains stand as a stark reminder of the folly of human hubris.
